Benefits - Fastest movement into tree, USDA approved, no exposure to harmful chemicals, Tested in Michigan forests, Over 95% effective. Extremely effective against Emerald Ash Borer.
(Used by Arbor Doctor.)
Drawbacks - Very young trees cannot be treated. Holes need to be drilled in tree to use this method. Chemical uptake may be slow.
Root Injection
Benefits - Very fast movement into tree. Chemical goes directly to source.
Drawbacks - Does major damage to lawn. Lengthy process that often is expensive. If ground is saturated chemical will not get into the tree. Can be harmful to drinking water system.
Spraying
Benefits - Eliminates defoliators immediately. Can be more effective for lower branching trees, such as some crab apples. Best results for some diseases.
(Used by Arbor Doctor.)
Drawbacks - Not very environmentally friendly. Can be an expensive and lengthy process. Animals and people can be harmed by these methods.
Process
Holes are drilled in the tree at 8" increments and chemical uses gravity to drain into tree moving directly into the vascular system of the tree. Chemical units are pulled once tree has taken all the chemical. Holes can be filled but is not required.
Process
Grass is taken up around the tree to locate roots, so chemical can be administered. Chemical is brought near tree either by tube or bringing a large barrel into yard. Chemical and water mixture is pumped into tree through root system.
Process
Chemical is mixed, and placed in sprayer container; It is sprayed all over the tree and is soaked into bark and leaves. Area should be occupied only by technician during spraying.
Process
Arbor Systems: Needles are tapped into tree; Chemical is then injected directly into living tissue.
Arbor Jet: Holes are drilled into the tree; A cap is placed in these holes. Chemical is injected using a pressurized system.
Base Soak
Benefits - Chemical can be applied by homeowner.
Drawbacks - Chemical is often too weak to fight off most diseases. Often confusing to homeowners on how much to apply. Chemical can get into water system. The roots do not take up all the chemical applied, since it gets absorbed in the dirt as well.
Process
Chemical is mixed with water as per instructions. It is often important to have a tape measure to measure the diameter of your tree. Chemical is mixed with many gallons of water and is dumped around the base of the tree. The roots take the chemical up the tree.
Trunk injection
Benefits - System gets chemical directly to source to help fight disease. Does not harm environment, since chemical goes only into tree.
(Used by Arbor Doctor.)
Drawbacks - Applicator error can be a problem with unlicensed and uneducated technicians. Holes are made in tree.

More About Methods
With new technologies coming out, in the field of treating and saving trees, Arbor Doctor is always staying cutting edge. In 2010 the method we used has switched from only Mauget products to include Wedgle products, and in 2015 we incorporated Arbor Jet into our treatment options. Some new chemicals have come out that allow us to control growth of a tree, and production of fruit or seeds in trees. Also, anti-bacterial products are now on the market for us to fight off many diseases such as Ash Yellows.
A few years ago the Bayer product that is pictured above had to remove emerald ash borer from its label due to its ineffective results in saving ash trees. This now leaves customers with no options to save ash trees on their own. The best active ingredient to kill flat headed borers, like the emerald ash borer, is emamectin benzoate followed by immidichloprid. In most methods these active ingredients kill the ash borer with over a 95% success rate.
