Emerald Ash Borer, dutch elm disease, maple wilt, disease control, tree treatments
Arbor Doctor was first started to help from the spread of Emerald Ash Borer.  We first started pre-treating valuable ash trees upon customer request only.  Since then we have treated maple trees for verticillium wilt more that all other diseases combined.  This disease is very serious.  It is also called maple wilt becuase it only occurs in the maple family of trees.
Verticillium wilt primarily kills off the sugar maple tree. The first signs of the disease are very hard to find unless you know what you are looking for.  Once a tree has verticillium wilt really bad nearly any homeowner could point it out.  Maple wilt has been much worse in sugar maple trees this year more than any.  This is becuase of drought.  The lack of water puts extra stress on the tree which allows the disease to run its course and eventually take over the tree completely. Verticillium wilt can lie dormant in a tree for several years without any noticeable effects.  Then it will attack usually in the late summer to early fall of drought seasons.
So here is what to look for in the beginning stages of this disease.  You are looking up the trunk into the canopy.  Look at all of the protruding limbs and the trunks itself.  Pictured to the right are some great field shots I got of one tree that had very distinctive signs of verticillium wilt.  Yours does not have to look nearly that bad to have the disease.  Look
for white spots gathering on the limbs.
These are lichens that are growing
on the trees growing on the limbs.
The lichens will keep growing and
house the disease.  If verticillium
is not treated for they will continue
to spread and you will start to see
advanced stages of this disease.
That includes leaves turning a
yellow to orange color and sections
will start to die off.  This will be
followed very quickly by the tree
dying completely.
It spreads fast and multiplies very quickly as well.  This disease can kill a tree in the course of months so it should be taken very seriously.  Especially in the Sugar or Norway Maple species.  All trees that get this disease are subject to complete die off.
